Nearly a Million iOS Apps and Discovery Still Sucks

Technology News: App Store: Nearly a Million iOS Apps and Discovery Still Sucks: "There are well over 800,000 iOS apps in the App Store, 300,000 of which are native to the iPad, and I'm constantly surprised and irritated at Apple's inability to help its customers discover great apps. Of course, maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm the only one who actively goes into Apple's various App Store points of entry -- iTunes, iPad and iPhone -- only to walk away without downloading anything.

I also spend more time online than I care to admit, tooling around the online Apple universe -- and still, it seems like I just get lost in app reviews and news of things like Temple Run 2, which more than 50 million people managed to find and download. Maybe really great apps are all being found, and that as I look and look and walk away vaguely dissatisfied, maybe there's something inherently wrong with me."

Windows 3.1: Geeks' New Choice for Graphics?

Technology News: Community: Windows 3.1: Geeks' New Choice for Graphics?: "They say everything old is new again, and it would be difficult to find a better example than a post on Slashdot last week.

"Why a Linux User Is Using Windows 3.1" is the title of said post, which refers to a recent NetworkWorld story by the same name.

"About two weeks back, I was using my Android tablet and looking for a good graphics editor," author and said Linux user Bryan Lunduke began. "I wanted something with layers and good text drawing tools. There were some options, but nothing that compared to the Gimp, Inkscape, or Photoshop for the Desktop. Man, wouldn't it be great to have a full version of one of those running on my Nexus 7?"

EU's Cybersecurity Plan Requires Members to Report Attacks

Technology News: Cybersecurity: EU's Cybersecurity Plan Requires Members to Report Attacks: "European Union on Thursday announced a strategic plan designed to prevent and respond to cyberdisruptions and attacks. The heart of the plan: a requirement that all member states and key Internet enablers -- including some U.S.-based companies -- must report attacks.

Web-based companies and critical infrastructure operators such as e-commerce platforms, social networks and members of the energy, transport, banking and healthcare services, would have to report security incidents and adopt risk management strategies.

These actions are part of the EU's overall cyber security strategy for a free and open Internet."

Technology News: Tech Blog: Language Barriers Block BlackBerry From Japan Launch

Technology News: Tech Blog: Language Barriers Block BlackBerry From Japan Launch: "Unable to justify the operating costs, BlackBerry will not launch its newest handsets, the Z10 and Q10, in Japan -- at least not anytime soon.

The requirement to modify its operating system to accommodate the language influenced BlackBerry's plan to bow out of Japan, Reuters reported.

Another possible factor is that BlackBerry's market share in Japan has dropped from 5 percent to 0.3 percent. Launching the phones would have been a challenge regardless of operating system modifications.

Technology News: Gaming: Wikipad Tablet Gets Back in the Game

Technology News: Gaming: Wikipad Tablet Gets Back in the Game: "It could have been game over for Wikipad after a flaw in the initial production run of its gaming tablet forced a launch delay late last year. The company used the extra time, however, to rethink the Wikipad, and this week it said the revised version will debut this spring.

The new version will be smaller; instead of the previously shown 10-inch model, the company now plans to bring out a 7-inch version that promises to be more portable. It will also feature a friendlier $249 price tag. In addition to the new form factor, the new Wikipad will feature some key refinements to its dual-analog stick controller, ensuring that games are still a key component to this Android-based device."

Technology News: Tech Buzz: HP Looks to Limit Student Labor in China

Technology News: Tech Buzz: HP Looks to Limit Student Labor in China: "HP, one of the top three PC manufacturers, announced Friday that it had directed suppliers in China to limit their use of student labor. The move comes amid growing concerns in the tech community about working conditions in overseas factories.

The announcement also follows recent efforts by Apple to address problematic labor practices in China.

As with other high-tech companies, HP sources many of its products from China, and the company is taking a proactive stand on the increase of student and temporary workers. In many cases, underage workers -- often with forged documents -- are recruited to work in factories by agencies that offer the promise of internships or temporary assignments."

Technology News: Personal Computers: Nemo, Early Reviews Freeze Out Surface Pro Launch: "Microsoft scrapped plans for Friday night's launch of its Surface Pro tablet at the Best Buy store in New York City because of an impending blizzard meteorologists have dubbed "Nemo."

Tips to book an IRCTC Tatkal ticket faster

Tips to book an IRCTC Tatkal ticket faster: "India, trains are one of the easiest and cheapest modes of transport. Over the years, booking train tickets has become convenient using the IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation) website. In fact, according to the comScore and ASSOCHAM India report, IRCTC is the leading travel e-commerce site in the country with the highest transaction share in the travel category. One out of five online users in India visits the Indian Railways site, with almost 12 million unique visitors monthly and majority of the traffic is seen between 10 am to 12 pm. It is during this time that IRCTC allows booking Tatkal tickets, which means tickets that are reserved for people with last minute travel plans, travel emergencies and so on. IRCTC receives a lot of flak for its slow, sluggish performance and had become a laughing stock when the site crashed (server inability, low bandwidth) during the festivities last year, just minutes after Tatkal bookings began. Currently, it is said to sell about 40-45,000 Tatkal railway tickets between 10 am and 11 am (its 10 and 11, because all tickets are sold in one hour – in fact, 45 mins)"

Ubuntu OS for Samsung Galaxy Nexus to arrive late February

Ubuntu OS for Samsung Galaxy Nexus to arrive late February: "The Galaxy Nexus was announced in 2011 and has been one of the most popular stock Android smartphones and the reason for Ubuntu picking this handset hasn’t been entirely clear. If we had to guess, it would be down to the Galaxy Nexus’ ease in being hacked and flashed with a new ROM. One thing is for sure, Canonical, the company that produces Ubuntu, will have loads of Galaxy Nexus owners waiting to beta test the ROM.

Shuttleworth also told the Journal that Canonical plans to partner with OEMs and carriers to deliver phones with Ubuntu pre-installed. However, he stopped short of mentioning any names. Clearly, getting Ubuntu OS on the Galaxy Nexus is just the first step. He also wouldn't reveal where the first Ubuntu phones would be launched and preferred to tell the paper that the company plans to have the phones available in "two large geographic markets" later this year."
